Class News 4-19-24

April 19, 2024 Class News

We had another terrific week learning together in the magical land of kindergarten! We participated in the Kids Heart Challenge assembly and observed our class caterpillars! Take a peek at what else we have been up to!

Star Student this week was Meraluce. Next week will be Nora.

Sight Words: out and many

Phonics: We focused on consonant blends sc, sn, and sw this week. Ask your child if they can think of words that begin with these blends!

Literacy Centers: This week at the library center, students searched for sc, sn, and sw blends in picture books. At the iPad center, students worked on sounding out CVC words, spelling, and letter formation. This week at the phonics center, students unscrambled spring picture cards and then recorded the correct sentence on their recording sheet! At the guided reading center, students continued to work on comprehension checks, CVC word games, and reading stories.

Writer’s Workshop/Science: We continued our butterfly journey and compared and contrasted caterpillars and butterflies using a Venn Diagram. Ask your child how they are alike and how they are different! We also brainstormed what butterflies can do, what they have and what they need! We continue to observe the amazing cycle of a butterfly’s life in our classroom and record our observations in our butterfly journals. Students also used different types of pasta to re-tell the life cycle. Look for this in your child’s Friday folder!

We continue to focus on including 4 things to make our sentences complete-

1. Capital letters at the beginning of a sentence.

2. Spaces between words.

3. Period at the end of a sentence.

4. Mostly lowercase letters.

Math: This week we continued with Chapter 7: Composing and decomposing numbers 11-20. We continue to practice addition and subtraction facts to 10 through games and problem solving in our math journals!

Second Step: During our Second Step lesson this week, students learned how to feel calm in order to solve problems. We learned to take a deep breath, and/or ask for help if we need help with a problem with a friend!
